Upstream Processes: 5 stages

Stage 1: Scrap operations
Scrap is collected and screened for radiation
Scrap is further processed by sorting, shearing and shredding

Stage 2: Meltshop – Melting process
Scrap is screened for radiation again
Scrap is melted using the electric arc furnace

Stage 3: Meltshop – Chemistry refinement and temperature control
Molten steel is transferred to the 80-tonne Ladle Furnace for chemistry refinement and temperature control

Stage 4: Meltshop – Continuous casting
Refined molten steel flows to this machine with a 5-strand high speed caster
Billets are cast from it
The billets are directly hot charged to the rolling mill, resulting in fuel oil savings

Stage 5: Bar & wire rod production at the rolling mill
Automated process where billets are rolled into reinforcement bars and wire rods
Rolling mill has a capacity of 1 million tonnes per annum
Fast design speeds of 30m/s for 10mm diameter rods and 100m/s for 5.5mm diameter rods
Precise tolerance control using a six-pass bar block
