Obayashi overcame the challenge of space constraints
in constructing five blocks of SMU’s city campus by using
NatSteel’s offsite cut-and-bend rebar fabrication service.
The contractor need not store excess rebars on the worksite
as they were delivered just-in-time by NatSteel. As the rebars
were bent to requirements by NatSteel before delivery, they used less
steel to achieve better quality results. Obayashi saved time,
money and precious space as well as manpower needed.

Key to this project’s success is the extensive
use of NatSteel’s prefabricated cage service as it gives the contractor
substantial savings compared to fixing the cages on site. By using
less on-site space, manpower and site costs are lowered, and site
safety enhanced. Just-in-time deliveries of the prefabricated cages
produced according to detailed design specifications help lower administrative
costs.

The extensive rebar to mesh conversion done for this
project greatly reduced the time required to set the steel into the
floor slab, achieving significant savings in casting time. In addition,
in using NatSteel’s ECOMAS starter bar system, the contractor doesn’t
have to drill into the formwork to add starter bars on the core walls
or use makeshift polystyrene foam which takes time to fit. This further
shortens casting time. |
